Fashion from African textiles
Chizika was established by Zuzana Lhotová in 2010. Zuzka is studying anthropology and went to Tanzania for reasearch of Tingatinga painters. She was interested in colorful patterns of African textiles at the first moment. Together with her African seamstress she began inventing different models first for herself then for her friends and now for you! She designs original dresses, daring tops, confortable pants, crazy skirts, practical bags...
Currently Zuzka cooperates with three seamstresses. Mama Johnson leads small taylor's shop, which employs several young apprentice. This workshop is very popular among local women, who appreciate the innovative approach to classic African clothing. In Tanzania there are catalogs of skirts, tops and dresses, according to which women can choose what they want to sew. They usually select the textile by themselves, buy them on market and bring them to the workshop.
Another seamstress and businesswomen at the same time is Rose, who founded her own company SmartHome Ltd. The company consists of taylor's workshop, office and shop. Rose offers her products abroad - in Japan, USA and thanks to Chizika also in Europe.
Esther is Zuzka's neighbour and friend from Dar es Salaam. During the evenings is the right time to discuss new ideas. Esther works for a large workshop in the city center and if the electricity is available she can make new dress in a short time. Dar es Salaam is unfortunately often without electricity which is a problem for electric sewing machines which are used for finishing clothes. Therefor is needed not only inspiration but also a considerable dose of patience and optimism in the African style.
